Kathryn Markel Fine Arts is pleased to present Places to Get Lost, by
Cynthia Sisson. This will be the artist's first solo exhibition since joining the gallery.
Cynthia Sisson’s paintings explore the acceptable norms of intimacy and sexuality through the use of a romantic language. The dialogue includes images of femininity, such as the delicate embroidery of lingerie, to a palette of pink pastels, warm flesh tones, and the wet greens of dripping rain. Sisson adds hints of the unexpected in her seemingly demure floral motifs and sinewy waterscapes. The painting's surfaces are densely layered with acrylic and poured enamel that adds texture and soft seductive details to the conversation. Strongly influenced by her conservative southern roots, Sisson intertwines a form of abstract eroticism with whimsical fantasies, approached from a feminine perspective. Sisson "looks for humor in the sentimental, beauty in the embarrassing and strength in what appears to be purely sweet." The New York Times called her work "an amalgam of color field painting, Indian miniature ornamentation and Victoria's Secret fantasy."
Cynthia Sisson was born in Birmingham, Alabama. She received her BFA from Auburn University and her MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2000. Her paintings have been exhibited widely including solo shows in Atlanta, New York and Milan. She has also exhibited in numerous groups shows and been reviewed by The Village Voice, The New York Times and Flash Art as well as several Italian publications
