Kathryn Markel Fine Arts is proud to present the second solo exhibition of paintings by Montreal artist
Peter Hoffer. Hoffer's exhibition, Stigmata, will combine several of his concept-based landscape paintings with a newly developed body of non-representational work.
Peter Hoffer's seemingly familiar and traditional landscapes are merely figments of his imagination and fragments of his visual memory. Hoffer's landscapes are appropriated from the tradition of landscape painting, and based on the collective memory of thousands of historical paintings. Hoffer's unique process of distressing wood panels, painting quickly and expressionistically, then scraping and reapplying additional layers of paint, create serene and solitary landscape paintings that appear to be old and worn. He finishes with a final layer of poured resin, up to a ¼" thick, that acts as a barrier between the viewer and the open landscape, creating a mirage effect in which the vision continually eludes attainment.
Hoffer maintains this process in his approach to abstract painting but abandons the connotation to time and memory in order to further examine the more micro aspects of surface. With the introduction of various materials, both created and found, his emphasis is on layering and accumulation. Again, as with the previous paintings, resin encases the surface to act as a physical barrier. Additionally, the resin becomes a containing layer in the non- representational works, to seal and package the elements within the painting's structure itself.
Peter Hoffer is a native Canadian artist with degrees from the University of Guelph, Ontario, and Concordia University, Quebec. He has exhibited his work throughout Eastern Canada and has work in several well-known public collections such as Merrill Lynch, Musée des Bauxs' Arts in Montréal, and Michelin.
