Kathryn Markel Fine Arts is pleased to present Unknown Distance, an exhibition of new works on paper by
Susan Goethel Campbell.
Susan Goethel Campbell’s work focuses on the intersection of nature and man-made environments. The sky is her subject - a terrain she considers a type of wilderness that is encroached upon in much the same way that land is. Utilizing both urban and rural landscapes, Campbell explores the ratio of natural light to land experienced from, and influenced by, built environments.
Campbell’s urban landscapes are sharp and imposing. The skies are slightly more than slivers of luminosity set against stark silhouettes of city architecture. Campbell achieves a depth and coolness to her graphic silhouettes using black etching ink as her drawing medium. Conversely, Campbell’s rural skyscapes are delicate and expansive. Brushing the ink across the paper’s surface in minute gradation captures the subtle and ephemeral nature of clouds and open skies. Campbell imposes an architectural dimension, however, by piecing together separately drawn sections of the scenes. The construction creates geometric lines through the image and emphasizes the abrupt edge, or end, of the open skies on either side. Campbell’s rural depictions mimic the often disrupted and segmented view of nature experienced from windows, interior spaces and other man-made environments.
Campbell exhibits extensively throughout the Mid and Eastern United States and is represented by the collections of the Allen Art Museum in Oberlin OH and the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington DC, among other public and private collections. She received her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and continues to live and work in Michigan.
