We are pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by Shigeru Oyatani. This is his first one person show at the gallery.
Oyatani's new works combine elements of abstraction and representation, pattern and grid, surface and illusion, and observation and imagination. He uses dashes of color to represent light and define space. Whether he is hovering in front of skyscrapers or floating above cities, he has discovered in the aerial vantage a new visual vocabulary. Through repetitive decorative design, Oyatani depicts the metropolis as a spectacle.
Oyatani was born in Kobe, Japan, in 1972. Although mostly a self-taught artist, he studied at the School of Visual Arts and the Arts Student League in New York. Most recently, he had a solo exhibition at Bentley Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona.
