Reception: September 6, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
529 W 20th St
We are pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition “FlyAway” – recent drawings and sculpture by
Sydney Blum.
Using simple drawing materials in a sculptural context, Blum creates planes, line and bold playful shapes that blow apart, tending towards spatial entropy.
Working with pencil, paint, paper chipboard and rubber
Sydney Blum’s process is one of discovering form. She starts with a big bold shape that she zealously cuts and adds to, and the end result might come from a discarded piece on the floor. The hard-edged white shapes in her sculptures replicate the wall and break away from the wall. The shapes are not contained, but explode into space.
This group of sculptures paired with the drawings has its origins in Blum’s past work - from the intense color and unraveling of forms in the eighties, to the large organic forms of the nineties, to the quirky colorful geometries of the wire pieces in her past show.
The drawings and corresponding sculptures in this new series start from the simple premise to begin again, to simplify art into its primary elements of line, shape and color.
