Jennifer Coates' vividly colored paintings combine implied representation with evocative abstraction to hold an illusory space between a poetic Symbolism and a pensive psychedelia. She uses the conventions of landscape as an anchor for her hallucinatory visions that simultaneously reference the mind and body.
An expanse of sky or sea coalesce into pools of thought-like reflection; horizons fissure and swell like the breathing of skin, while intricate vines tangle into knots of energized ganglia; and the geometry of the cosmos infinitely folds into and ever-expanding and collapsing vortex. Coates' contrasts an allusive radiance with painstaking details that slowly crystallize and reveal themselves. Varied painterly approaches are positioned against each other to create a disjunctive yet desirable experience of place.
Coates lives and works in New York City, where she has exhibited frequently, with this being her second solo exhibition. She teaches at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art in Philadelphia and often writes on art.
