Reception: May 11, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
521 W 21st St
The
Kravets/Wehby Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of new paintings by
Aya Uekawa opening on Saturday, May 11, 2006 with an opening reception from 6-8 pm and running through June 17, 2006.
Contemplative women search for the unattainable in the paintings of
Aya Uekawa. Ominous branches creep upon one woman as she gazes longingly towards the imperceptible ground. Aya often positions a city girl persona in a serene setting drawing attention to the inner turmoil beneath sweet appearances. Aya is an exquisite draughtswoman and painter with a style reminiscent of Renaissance master drawings and Medieval altarpieces. Subtly peculiar facial expressions and exuberantly braided hairstyles interweave secret meanings that are unique and breathtaking in detail. Eyes and lips are distorted in a manner that evokes as many emotions as ethnicities. Her work is a balance between not wanting to completely abandon her traditional upbringing in suburban Tokyo and integrating her new Western identity.
Aya Uekawa is a young Japanese born artist who lives and works in New York. Her work was recently included in " New Trajectories I: Relocations: Recent painting, drawing and multi-media work from the Ovitz Family Collection, Los Angeles", Cooley Gallery, Reed College, Portland, OR as well as "School Days," at Jack Tilton Gallery in New York. Her work will be included in the upcoming "25 BOLD MOVES” curated by Simon Watson and Craig Hansela of Scenic. This will be her first solo show.
