521 W 21st StThe Kravets/Wehby Gallery is pleased to announce "Materiality" curated by Erin Abraham and including work by Polly Apfelbaum, Charlotte Becket, Yi Chen, Tom Friedman, Katharina Fritsch, James Gobel, Kent Henricksen, Titus Kaphar, Ernesto Neto, Carolyn Salas, and Mickalene Thomas opening on Thursday, June 29, 2006 with an opening reception from 6-8 pm and running through August 25, 2006.
The exhibition "Materiality" includes an impressive variety of materials and techniques that inform the viewer in vastly different ways. The combination of consciously unique media draws interesting connections amongst the work. Aligned pieces of breakfast cereal become humorous and visually pleasing. Silk velvet pairs a long history of fabric makes and dyes with new context. Finely worked embroidery continues in the history of painstakingly intricate embellishment. Mylar reminisces of past and continuing creative endeavors in both science and art. The list continues, each informing the other and each adding to the dialogue about material well beyond singular use.
Erin Abraham has worked with Kravets/Wehby gallery for the past two years. She recently received her MA in visual arts administration from NYU.
