Ode to Joy

Reception: September 9, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The
Kravets/Wehby Gallery is pleased to announce Ode to Joy the solo exhibition of new painting, drawing and sculpture by
Charlie Roberts on Saturday September 9, 2006 with an opening reception from 6-8 pm through October 7, 2006.
The work of
Charlie Roberts is an event. Movie stars, rappers, renowned artwork, cartoon characters and other emblems of pop culture meet and greet in otherworldly settings. Politically and socially charged shapes or forms often provoke and raise issues in a complex sorting of chosen imagery. Roberts uses countless materials including paper, wood, masking tape, hot glue and acrylic paint. The substantial size and depth of his sculpture offsets the delicate materials he uses to create them. Paintings of platforms chock full of art and activity branch into pyramid formations where fans and revelers congregate in highly ordered chaos. Roberts often incorporates narrative elements about his life including friends and family. A towering wedding cake of paper mache includes hundreds of painted faces of guests, both animals and humans, in tribute to the recently wedded artist himself.
Charlie Roberts is originally from Kansas and currently lives and works in Oslo, Norway. He attended Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver. Charlie’s work will be included in “Paint” curated by Neil Campbell at the Vancouver Art Gallery opening this September. This will be his first solo exhibition in New York.
