LMAKprojects would like to invite you to Urban Legend a two persons show by
Carlos Roque and
Alvaro Verduzco. The artists will present works in different media: drawings, mixed-media installations as well as murals, reflecting current societal concerns. It is through their works that the artists attempt to make sense of our world.
Urban legends are best described as cautionary or moralistic tales passed along by those who believe the incidents befell either people they know personally or acquaintances of friends or family members. Whereas the setting of more traditional legends place them in the realm of long ago, urban legends are set against the backdrop of contemporary times — the stories take place in shopping malls and coed dormitories and feature such up-to-date bogeymen as terrorists, AIDS, and inner-city gangs. Though some of these tales go back a century or more, their details are continually being updated to keep them current with the times; the horse and buggy of bygone days becomes the BMW of today.
In the exhibition the artists interpret Urban Legend in their own way. Both,
Carlos Roque and
Alvaro Verduzco mix popular culture and comic books to create narratives bordering on fantasy, and offer a unique approach to our contemporary universe. Roque’s visual examination contains urban culture and the predominant role of the values of rock music. He is aware that any cultural content, no matter how alternative, can be conceived as esthetic, he seduces the viewer by means of the interactive potential that characterizes most of his work.
Verduzco exploits the vocabulary of a contemporary drawing practice with roots in the popular visual topography and references to topics such as celebrities, comics and social and political activism. For this exhibition he will create a mural based on the stories that have been told to him by friends of friends of friends. Instead of continuing to narrate these stories to another person, he will draw them directly on the wall, thus passing over and transgressing different sorts of disciplines.
Carlos Roque (1969) was born in Lisbon, Portugal. Currently he lives and works in New York City. He had numerous solo and group-shows at venues like 3rd Ward Brooklyn and Joymore Gallery in Brooklyn, Presenca Gallery and Serralves Contemporary Art Museum in Porto,

He graduate in Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal and attended a photography course at Instituto Português de Fotografia, Portugal.
