Larissa Goldston Gallery is pleased to present Help! (bannersflyerstencils), an exhibition of new work by
Joey Kötting. Inspired by his old neighborhood in Brooklyn and his new life in Los Angeles, the banner, flyers, stencils, collages, drawings and prints included in this exhibition explore the transformation of ideas through various media, using content as diverse as James Ensor’s Christ’s Entry into Brussels in 1889, the state of the human condition and politics.
The main body of work is a series of self-portraits. They are brutally unflattering and outrageous depictions in which his face appears burnt, scarred and bloodied. They examine the dastardly side of the human condition while simultaneously offering a general sympathy for the inner pain from which vanity is derived. He has also applied the self-portraits in The Entry of Christ Into Barking, a 6 x 10 ft. banner using Ensor’s most famous work as a commencing point.
The remaining drawings, photographs, paintings, and prints included in the exhibition come from images Kötting has been collecting for years. They represent his study of people’s passive and sometimes aggressive behaviors. He observes, “we are living in troubled times; complacency and “Democracy” reign supreme; Sectarianism is spreading like wild fire; the fear of losing is prevalent and hope is almost lost; the voice of protest has been suppressed and the media seems nothing but a business. But everywhere I look, flyers, banners and stencils are still being used as a means of getting the word out…they are the Luddite’s blog.”
Joey Kötting was born in England in 1966. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles. He received his MFA from Tyler School of Art 1991 and holds a BFA from Brighton Polytechnic. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2004 and has exhibited internationally. This is his fist solo exhibition at the gallery.
