Karen Yank's visual vocabulary is invested with a wealth of symbolic allusions to regeneration, unity, astronomy, and Eastern meditation practices. Working with industrial metals such as steel and Cor-ten, Yank often subverts the literal qualities of strength and physicality inherent to these materials by bisecting forms or incising them with circular fields of negative space.
As Kathleen Whitney has commented, "Despite their origins in industrial materials and processes, Karen Yank's work is infused with a kind of exaltation of the object as the repository of both meaning and gesture."
