Otto: Expand

Reception: February 23, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Lemmons Contemporary is pleased to present Expand, an exhibition of new paintings by McKay Otto. This is Mr. Otto's first New York solo exhibition and his first with Lemmons Contemporary.
The recent paintings of McKay Otto are concerned with the duality of absence and presence, the material and immaterial. After encountering the work of Lucio Fontana at the Tate Modern in London, Otto began to reconsider the physical and associative limitations of linen canvas, which he abandoned for a more modern material-nylon. Painting in acrylic on pantyhose stretched over a painted wooden support, Otto achieves what he terms a "transparent canvas."
The layering of planes of pale color activates a dialogue between matter, space, and light, confusing the viewer's sense of spatial depth. Otto effectively creates portals, ladders and fields that stimulate interior reflection and instigate the "release of connections to the material world."
McKay Otto was born in Wharton, Texas in 1947. He studied painting and sculpture at the Laguna Gloria School of Art and the Glassell School of Art, Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. Otto has exhibited in several one-person and group exhibitions in Vancouver, Denver, Santa Fe, New Orleans, and Florence and Bologna, Italy.
