Remnants: A Group Show
May 4, 2006- June 8, 2006
Reception: May 4, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
210 11th Ave
REMNANTS focuses on ways in which artists incorporate the remnants of their environments into their artistic process. For this exhibition, the word “remnants” represents the remaining quantity of something when the greater part has been used; the surviving trace. In JUDY TUWALETSTIWA’s new installation, The Bat: Residue of Wings, clustered remains from the feeding cycles of bats in Galisteo, New Mexico. These specimens are delicately arranged into poetic compositions. Lemmons Contemporary will feature a solo exhibition of Tuwaletstiwa’s work in November 2006.
KAREN YANK and TRACY KRUMM incorporate found and re-salvaged metal into their sculptures. Yank welds stainless steel and Cor-ten breaking down the iconic shape of the sphere. Krumm joins delicate woven wire to otherwise masculine found industrial parts. Lemmons Contemporary will feature a solo exhibition of Krumm’s new work in October 2006.
BARBARA ZUSMAN often incorporates found objects reminiscent of ancient artifacts into her wrapped linen sculptures that provide a context in which to interpret her amorphous forms. ROBERT KELLY’s Thicket series is created through a process of cutting and recomposing strips of painted canvas, invoking a sense of nostalgia for the remnants of painterly brushstrokes on canvas.
LINDA FLEMING’s immense canvas template reveals stains of rust and heavy imprints of steel plates mapping the future outline of her large scale steel sculptures. SONO OSATO creates thick layers of paint in which she embeds found objects from her urban environment. This will be the first showing of Osato’s paintings with Lemmons Contemporary.
