Lohin Geduld Gallery is pleased to present Five in the Field, an exhibition of landscape paintings by five contemporary artists. Judy Koon,
Ro Lohin,
Lynette Lombard,
Younghee Choi Martin, and
Megan Williamson all share a belief in the power and relevancy of on-site painting in nature.
Beginning with Impressionism, plein air painting has captivated generations of artists wishing to have a direct communication with the natural world. The abundance of information and sensations found in the landscape can be an overwhelming proposition. The chaos of one’s surroundings must be organized pictorially to be understood. The response of these five artists to this challenge allows the viewer a shared experience in the perception and feel of each specific site. Each artist’s unique formal painting language also gives the viewer a glimpse of their interior discourse.
The works in this exhibition are not idealized versions of nature such as are found in the Hudson River School or Italian painting. They are reflections of the artist’s response to a particular moment within nature, a moment that is ever-changing as daylight shifts, breezes blow, and time passes. A sense of flux and fleeting beauty permeates these works, as well as a feeling of immersion in the elemental vitality of contemplating the natural world. These paintings give us the sensation of being part of a larger whole and sharpen our vision as we look around at what else the world has to offer.
Five in the Field, a group of artists organized by Chicago-based painter
Megan Williamson, is having its inaugural exhibition at
Lohin Geduld Gallery. The group will continue to exhibit at other venues throughout the United States.
