Lohin Geduld Gallery is proud to present our second exhibition of paintings by
Jay Milder.
Throughout his career
Jay Milder has used the act of painting as a conduit for the exploration of mankind’s psychological and spiritual makeup. From his early days studying with Hans Hofmann, through his figurative expressionism of the 1960s and ‘70s, and on to today, Milder paints aiming at communion with a greater whole.
Using exuberant colors and tactile paint handling, Milder wrestles his spiritual signposts into existence. His work has the air of a shamanistic event, with symbols and meanings emerging from his ritualistic painting practice. Numbers and letters fly about in Milder’s intricate drumbeat compositions. Kabbalistic numerology intersects with the chakra points of yoga philosophy. A blissful face emerges occasionally from the paintings’ din. All is held together with Milder’s dynamic abstract improvisation and material sensitivity.
Milder sees himself as a Byzantine artist, in that his paintings are meant to be portals into a world beyond our physical present. In the duality of Milder’s work, we are also given a lush painterly experience to enjoy. The artist’s hand is ever present, smearing, scraping, and cajoling his topsy- turvy forms that shimmy and shake with the secret keys to enlightenment. These are paintings that speak on many different levels, revealing their complexities slowly over several viewings. What is foremost in our understanding of these works is the sheer joy and potency
Jay Milder finds in the language and process of painting.
Jay Milder was a founding member of the influential Rhino Horn Group and his biblically-inspired pieces from the 1960s have been called "after Nolde’s biblical pictures, the best and most integral group of biblical pictures in the 20th century." (Donald Kuspit) Milder’s recent important exhibitions have included a retrospective in 1999 at the Museum of Fine Arts, Rio de Janeiro and an exhibition in 2003 of recent work at the Museum of Modern Art, Bahia. His work was also chosen to exemplify American pre-1980s style in the Museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro. Mr. Milder has exhibitions forthcoming in 2006 at the Museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro, at the National Museum, Costa Rica, and at Alitash Kebede Gallery, Los Angeles.
