Lohin Geduld Gallery is proud to present recent paintings by
Kevin Wixted. In his sixth solo exhibition in New York, Wixted explores the intersection between architectural forms and painting ideas. Using the basic structure of cities and fortifications, Wixted "builds" the formal relationships of color, shape, and scale into shimmering compositions suggestive of both bustling urban centers and medieval hill towns.
The genesis of Wixted’s imagery begins with on-site drawings and watercolors done at locations as varied as Mayan ceremonial centers in the Yucatan, Moroccan palaces, Italian duomos, and Ireland’s beehive huts and castles. These experiences are assimilated with Wixted’s meditations on the skyline of New York City. The results are a confluence of sources and impressions yielding playfully dynamic cities that seem both ancient and futuristic.
Wixted’s polychromatic constructions can be taken as either projections of architectural follies or tangible places. They share the metaphysical air of Morandi and De Chirico while presenting an encoded geometry reminiscent of Alfred Jensen. These paintings are full of puzzles and visual games, presented in the lush vernacular of impasto oil paint and sumptuous color. They are works of supreme simplicity and sophistication, straddling the territories of architecture, abstraction, and meditative gesture.
Kevin Wixted has had solo exhibitions at
