Reception: January 27, 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Lohin Geduld Gallery is proud to present our second exhibition of paintings and works on paper by
Mark Heyer.
A sense of melancholy and literary timelessness permeates the recent works of
Mark Heyer. Open, uninhabited skiffs float aimlessly near the shore as hazy clouds drift in the sky above. A mounted knight ambles through a rustic landscape worthy of Sassetta. Meanwhile a circus performer balances on a white horse, in a perpetual attempt to titillate and entertain. A dirigible cruises past a blood red moon.
In these works
Mark Heyer continues to explore narrative in his signature style. With homage to Henri Rousseau and Horace Pippin, Heyer explores a territory of archetypical imagery and deeply felt emotions. These are images that seem to have always been with us, much like a Dylan song that captures a long-past American ethos, or Melville’s timeless biblical creations. Heyer alternates between channeling the romanticism of Albert Pinkham Ryder and telling silly duck jokes à la Groucho Marx. His ability to make us suspend disbelief is a testament to Heyer’s storytelling gifts. With a minimum of means he conjures a world as familiar and strange as our own unconscious. Each painting is lovingly, individually framed by the artist. Heyer’s choice of using distressed patinas on these frames give the work an added air of age and survival.
Mark Heyer proves that all stories become new in their retelling.
Mark Heyer received a BA from the Swain School of Design in New Bedford, Massachusetts and an MFA from the Parsons School of Design, New York. His work has appeared in numerous solo and group exhibitions including
