Lohin Geduld Gallery is proud to present our second solo exhibition by
Mayumi Sarai.
Ms. Sarai’s art conveys an intimate relationship with the natural world. Her sculptures derive from a deep knowledge and understanding of organic structures and systems. Poetic biomorphic shapes cluster and huddle together, infusing her forms with characteristics ranging from contemplative to joyful. Sarai is experiencing her surroundings from the inside out, an active participant in a world where nature and art are one and the same.
Sarai’s practice begins by collecting discarded tree branches and limbs. This foraging for materials puts her in direct contact with nature and suggests a more elemental relationship where human activity and environment are inseparable. In the studio, using hammer and chisel, Sarai laboriously shapes and hones the wood into the modular building units which constitute her vision. Each piece displays Sarai’s distinct chisel marks, infusing the final sculpture with an emotional significance that comes from intense, pleasurable labor.
The results are powerful, moving meditations on nature and our relationship with it. Sarai’s orbs and log jambs have a rough-hewn balance and grace. They gather, flow, and morph, demonstrating that hybrids of organic growth are the norm, not the exception. These works make visible the idea that a spiritual realm can be found in the contemplation of nature’s cycles. In our technological age,
Mayumi Sarai’s art informs us that there is still much to be learned underfoot and overhead.
Mayumi Sarai was born in Aichi, Japan and moved to New York City in 1991. She studied at Nihon University College of Art in Tokyo and the New York Studio School.
