Lohin Geduld Gallery is proud to present our current exhibition, "The Yellow Paintings" by Yvonne Thomas. This group of work, ranging from the 1960s to the present, reflects the continuous fascination Thomas has with the color yellow.
The battle of color versus form is a longstanding engagement in painting’s history. Renaissance masters pitted the clarity of Humanistic intellect found in the draftsman’s line against the passions and spirituality released by color. The Impressionists, by stepping outside and into a sun-drenched landscape, shrugged off centuries of chiaroscuro dominance. Twentieth century art found itself saturated in color, thanks to the Fauvists and their offspring. Studying with Motherwell, Rothko, and especially Hans Hofmann, Yvonne Thomas realized the tremendous expressive power of color. Throughout her long and rich career, Thomas has produced an astounding body of paintings that simultaneously engage the senses and the intellect.
The Yellow Paintings found in this exhibition are not meant to be a separate body of work, but an ongoing conversation Thomas has with the color. Periodically a yellow painting will appear within a designated series of work. Thomas now sees these yellow pieces as harbingers of change, signaling that an aesthetic shift is about to occur. This synesthetic response to color is at the core of Thomas’ painterly philosophy. Color first and foremost activates the senses, leaving conceptual understanding playing catch-up.
Yellow is a particularly difficult color to control. It can be dominant or submissive, solid or ephemeral. Thomas explores this phenomena through all its guises. Her ochres are solid as the Provencal countryside, her lemon yellows changeable as sunlight. Thomas gives us yellows that challenge their form, expanding the boundaries of where we think they should be. This group of paintings wonderfully illuminates Yvonne Thomas’ lifelong concerns as an artist. By focusing on the abstract dynamics of the here and now, one can be absorbed into the absolute.
Yvonne Thomas was born in France and studied at Cooper Union, the Art Students League, and Ozenfant School of Art. She studied with Hans Hofmann and worked in close collaboration with Motherwell, Rothko, Newman, Baziotes, and David Hare. She has been in many solo and group exhibitions in Aspen and in New York, including the Aspen Art Museum, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, and Anita Shapolsky gallery.
