Gladys Nilsson: Recent Watercolors
April 17, 2008- May 31, 2008
Reception: April 17, 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
511 W 25th St
In her first solo exhibition in New York in twenty years, Chicago’s
Gladys Nilsson provides a clinic in the art of watercolor in her current show at
Luise Ross Gallery.
Always recognized as an expert watercolorist, Nilsson’s use of this most difficult medium has evolved in nuance and subtlety to the point that she adds texture to the visual surface. She is a superb colorist and possesses an unerring sense of composition.
She also brings back with her the zany cast of figures—with their signature Nilsson attitudes and elastic, elongated arms and legs; the cats and birds and creatures and small-scale figures whereby she gently caricatures and choreographs the quotidian and the mundane as the operatic sub-plots in which we all have roles to play. As is frequently the case in Nilsson’s narratives, the main figures in many of the paintings in this exhibition play the roles of the diva; but perhaps characterized with a subtle difference from the whimsical humor and on-target wit with which they were portrayed previously. Here these qualities are tinged with a palpable—though unsentimental--homage to all our prima donnas, a wistful tribute to their steadfastness, courage, and vulnerability. “Brava!”
Art Reviews of Gladys Nilsson: Recent Watercolors
New York Times May 9, 2008 | | Ken Johnson | | "Since the mid-1960s, when she was a founding member of the Hairy Who, a group of rambunctious, Chicago-based image-makers, Gladys Nilsson has been painting a zany world of giant women presiding over busily populated domestic interiors and pastoral landscapes.
In this solo exhibition, her first in New York since 1987, Ms. Nilsson presents 11 lush watercolors made with consummate but not overly polished craft. These cartoonish works might strike a hurried New York viewer as too sweet and whimsical, but close looking reveals captivating visual and metaphorical riches. ..." |
