Jene Highstein: Minimalist sculpture on view in outdoor gallery

On Friday, October 21, 2005, the Mad. Sq. Art Gallery opened an exhibition of eleven sculptures by Minimalist Jene Highstein in stone, wood and metal. The Highstein sculptures, which will be on view through April 2006, share the park’s outdoor exhibition space with the Sol LeWitt exhibition that opened in the park in May 2005.

Mad. Sq. Art Gallery is the free outdoor museum organized by the Madison Square Park Conservancy in historic Madison Square Park featuring the work of outstanding contemporary artists. The Highstein exhibition marks the first time two exhibitions have been concurrently on view in the park.

Mad. Sq. Art Gallery: Jene Highstein offers a series of sculptures grouped by medium on five lawn panels in the park. Some of the groupings explore a basic sculptural form through subtle differences in texture and shape. Dangerous Object (Internal) is paired with Dangerous Object (External), both low, cylindrical forms with slanting tops that are sculpted in smooth and textured black granite. Another lawn panel features three of Highstein’s Tornado pieces, funnel-shaped forms in quartzite of varying surface patterns and textures. Other groupings feature objects in wood and cast iron.

Jene Highstein (b.1942) has been exhibiting his sculpture internationally since 1968. He received his B.A. from the University of Maryland, and a post-graduate degree from the Royal Academy in London. His works are in the collections of major museums, such as the Victoria and Albert, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim. He has created pieces of public art for the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, Wanas Sculpture Park in Sweden, Laumeier Sculpture Park in St. Louis among many other locations. Highstein has received four grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Guggenheim Award, and the-Saint Gauden’s Award from the Cooper Union. He lives and works in New York.
