Magnan-Emrich Contemporary is pleased to present Hot Latin Artists including a selection of significant examples from ten emerging artists dedicated to contemporary Latin-American art. The exhibition will be on view from June 29 – August 5, 2006.
Alejandro Almanza Pereda [Mexican, living in New York] addresses preconceived notions of danger and risk. Solid concrete blocks balance upon a series of light bulbs creating a sense of tension and awkwardness for the viewer. A recent graduate of Skowhegan, Alejandro has solo exhibitions scheduled for Mexico City and Magnan-Emrich Contemporary in the fall.
Tania Bruguera [Cuban] a well-known performance artist living in Havana and Chicago has shown in numerous biennials including Venice 2003 and 2005, Sao Paolo 1996 and Documenta 11 in 2002. A charcoal study for her Documenta installation/performance Untitled (Kassel) will be on view. The drawing lists names of countries and cities with civil unrest in which innocent civilians were killed.
Elizabeth Ceredijo [Cuban, living in Miami] deals with a deeply personal subject – her mother’s diagnosis of the Alzheimer’s disease. She photographs seemingly mundane objects that gain importance due to her mother’s increasing inability to operate them. Black and white text describes some of the items she has lost as well as that which will vanish in the future as she worsens.
Raul Cordero [Cuban, living in Havana] has exhibited extensively in the US and most recently in the Havana Biennial, 2006. His recent work captures images from videos and interprets them into a static media – painting. Cordero’s paintings challenge categories of classical painting and new media.
ElSoca & Fabian [Cuban living in Miami] are known for their meticulously rendered “bio-drawings” combining crushed insect particles to create the ink palette used in their lyrical, thought-provoking works on canvas. Painstakingly composed of tiny fly and roach wings and legs glued onto the canvas, images and text emerge.
exit [Puerto Rican/American, living between New York and LA] recently had his first solo show at Magnan-Emrich Contemporary “Bird Flu Dreams”. Obsessed with the Bird Flu virus, exit’ draws black clouds of birds descending on us and covering the city skies. Taking his visual cues from biker and skateboarder culture, these drawings are communicated through consumerism.
Florencio Gelabert [Cuban, living in Miami] is interested in furthering awareness of preserving our natural environment. Mixing diverse materials, both natural and industrial, Gelabert’s sculptures evoke new interpretations of conceptual alchemy forcing the viewer to reevaluate the relationship between organics elements and technology. He currently has a public sculpture in Marcus Garvy Park during the Harlem Arts Festival and will exhibit at the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum at Florida International University in 2008.
Thessia Machado [Brazilian, living in New York] is interested in “how a combinations of materials can trigger sensations, associations and can, by virtue of its physical and symbolic properties, convey meaning.” She has shown at the Bronx Museum and is a 2005 NYFA Fellowship recipient with an upcoming exhibition at Lehman College Art Gallery in Bronx, NY.
Arnaldo Morales [Puerto Rican, living in New York] is fascinated with the physicality of “low-tech” manual devices and mechanical systems. Out of industrial debris, Morales builds strange and beautiful shapes alluding to sexual operations, violent actions and mysterious purposes. He assaults the viewer while creating a dialogue through their interactions.
Christopher Obetz [American, living in New York] has traveled extensively in Cuba over the past year. His large scale, rich photographs document his interactions with the local people he encountered and their interactions with the community. Additionally he incorporated architectural elements into the photographs. In 2006, Obetz participated in an exhibition “Take a Seat” at the Neuberger Museum at SUNY Purchase.
