On 4 March 2006 the Mary Boone Gallery will open at its Chelsea
location “Space is the Place”, an exhibition of new paintings by
BRIAN ALFRED.
Mankind’s distinguishing characteristic is the drive to understand
the world, to reach beyond what is known. In this series of large new paintings, Brian Alfred explores visionary thought, with references as specific and diverse as NASA, the Situationists, Constructivists and
Sun Ra, to broader concepts of beauty, disaster, desire and escapism.
Beginning with scenes invented or culled from media photographs, Alfred
uses the computer to reduce an image to its essential forms and colors.
This pliant abstraction process allows him to modify the composition,
much as artists earlier would use preparatory drawings. When rendered
onto canvas, the final images, though forcefully direct, reveal the
Artist’s hand. Alfred applies paint in a way that makes flat areas
of color luminous and controlled lines organic.
The exhibition, at 541 West 24 Street, will run through 22 April 2006.
