Andy Collins 2007
January 6, 2007- February 10, 2007
541 W 24th St
On 6 January 2007 the
Mary Boone Gallery will open at its
Chelsea location an exhibition of new paintings by
Andy Collins.
Andy Collins paints fluent abstractions based on line and form extracted from
real images. By obscuring our recognition of the subject, Collins creates a dif-
ferent visual understanding of something familiar.
These compositions take on formal qualities, becoming a fusion of shapes that
suggest the contours and negative spaces of the human body. The surface of
each painting fluctuates from hard and glossy to soft and matte, reinforcing
the impression that the mutable space Collins envisions is comprised of many
distinct layers. By working with a defined range of pale colors, Collins trans-
forms paint into evocations of flesh, cream, smoke, sea, and sky. The images
become ethereal meditations on reality, with just enough suggestion of their
origin to avoid appearing arbitrary.
