With this new body of work, Emily Sartor’s intentions become dramatically clearer and her fascination with war settings and apocalyptic events have revealed themselves for what they really are: metaphors for her inner life.
The paintings are stories, environments drawn from her personal history, quite literally twisted and overwhelmed by narratives from songs, books and cinema.
Growing up on the bank of a Louisiana River has left on Sartor an indelible mark. The landscape of this river—its shifting tides and the detritus left behind—has become one of the main triggers in her latest work.
In her paintings, home life is expressed meticulously through the details of charming interiors replete with wallpaper and knickknacks, then sensuously ravished by swooning waters and entangling vines. Past, memories, loved ones, everything is entrapped by nature in an ambiguous protective embrace.
The natural world and more personal issues, such as memory, loss, love, and death, mingle together on the complex surface of the canvas. The idea of a journey comes to mind in looking at Sartor’s body of work, a journey that charts geography of tensions between inside and outside, memory and fantasy, past and present.
Sartor’s interest in the metamorphosis of her ruined world becomes something picturesque where even nature’s violent forgetfulness takes on the radiance of life's persistent renewal.
