Max Lang and Galerie Haas & Fuchs
announce the opening of
Julius Grünewald: 10000 Jahre, the artist’s first
solo exhibition in the United States. Thirteen richly decorated interiors
are the subject of this new body of work. They elaborate upon a motif
Grünewald has been investigating most of his career – his childhood
home in the historic Southwestern German city of Worms. The rooms
are not straightforward depictions; rather, the artist’s memory reigns
supreme. He creates paradoxical environments where the differences
between reality and his pictorial translations thereof reveal themselves
only after careful scrutiny.
In these atmospheric and moody canvases, Grünewald references the
19th century in his technique, rich palette, and subject matter. Yet his
paintings are thoroughly modern, employing simple titles like
“Esszimmer” and “Wohnzimmer” or “Dining Room” and “Living Room.”
These monumental paintings transcend time and place and are certainly
not merely dining rooms or living rooms; instead, they are grand
memento moris of these spaces. In Bücherregal V, for example, a freely
painted bookcase dissolves into white canvas, moving from figuration
to abstraction in the same composition. And in Untitled (Kronleuchter),
his impasto-laden Rococo chandelier emits an eerie light that would
likely fill an entire room but here fills the entire canvas. Abendessen an
Weihnachten presents the artist’s family gathered around a dining room
table partaking in Christmas dinner; however, Grünewald distorts the
figures beyond recognition in a Symbolist manner akin to Munch.
Julius Grünewald was born in Worms in 1965. He studied painting at the
prestigious Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe under
the tutelage of Per Kirkeby, whose painterly solutions to formal
problems greatly influenced his work. The artist now lives between
Berlin and Westohofen.
