Danielle Lamberti

Merge Gallery

205 W 20th St

An installation of over 20 recent paintings by New York artist Danielle Lamberti will be exhibited at Merge Gallery from July 10 through August 4. Lamberti is highly regarded in the 21st century figurative art movement.

Her paintings echo Superflat (the postmodern art movement founded by Takashi Murakami) styles and juxtapositions. Like most Superflat artists, her work takes a critical look at consumerism and the environment in the 21st century while remaining playful with color and bold lines not unlike those of manga and anime. The portrait is a recurring element that is used in most bodies of work created by Lamberti. Bright colors, rainbows and imagery that could be taken from a childs book fill the canvas. Within these works you will find subtle hints that all is not right for these characters. The fusion of innocent, cartoonish girls in short-sleeved sundresses being hugged by a sad-eyed polar bears is an example of her superb skill of marrying these dichotomies of joy and tragedy.

Lamberti touches on concerns for our current environmental state. In the Rainbow Room you will find a common theme, global warming. The artist describes her work as being a blend of experiences from attending an all girl catholic school to life in the 21st century. The artist states, I wanted to tell a story of what we see without even thinking about the problems of global warming. By asking How is this affecting us? Good or bad on an unconscious level?

Danielle was born in the Italian-American neighborhood of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn NY. Since receiving her B.F.A. from Pratt Institute, Danielle has kept busy working on both commercial and fine art projects. Designing products for both Comedy Central and Nickelodeon kept her busy until moving exclusively into fine arts in 2006. While working for Jonathan Levine Gallery she was able to assist artists such as Jeff Soto, Tim Biskup and Camille Rose Garcia.
