"He is the man who claimed responsibility for the explosion of the Challenger space shuttle and the earthquake in California; the man who threatened to evince the Colombian president Samper, by telepathy. He is a magician and he has the power to levitate and disappear. His assistants appear simultaneously at the four corners of the globe. Even belly dancers are in his employ. The art world? He doesn't want to know. But the art world needs him."
- Marc-Olivier Wahler, Director, Palais de Tokyo, Paris
Metro Pictures will present an exhibition by Swiss artist Gianni Motti in April 2006. Motti is best known for his dramatic and humorous interventions into the public sphere: from politics to sporting events, from art fairs to religious ceremonies. He consistently infiltrates situations and places normally closed to artists, using a blend of charm, persistence, fearlessness and radical politics. This will be Motti's first solo show in the United States.
In different projects, Motti has attempted to telepathically communicate with the president of Colombia, faked his own death and been carried in a coffin to a graveyard, insinuated himself into a week's worth of news stories by trailing a team of newspaper reporters, and crafted a bar of soap from what he has said was the fat removed during the Italian Prime Minister's cosmetic surgery. Motti's exhibition at Metro Pictures may include a performance, as well as audio and video elements.
Gianni Motti is based in Geneva. He has been featured in exhibitions and art projects throughout Europe, including Manifesta 4 and the 2005 Venice Biennale. He was a recipient of the 2005 Prix Meret Oppenheim, a prize awarded each year by the Swiss government for significant contributions to contemporary Swiss culture.
Art Reviews of Gianni Motti 2006
New York Times April 21, 2006 | | Roberta Smith | | "Can a psychic hired by an artist summon the ghost of John Lennon to a large, dark, closed-off gallery in Chelsea? Don't hold your breath. The séance, orchestrated by the Italian-born, Swiss-based artist Gianni Motti, occurred last month in the largest space at Metro Pictures, which remains closed and under around-the-clock infrared camera surveillance, in case Lennon shows up...." |
