Drawings of Skin
February 15, 2008- March 15, 2008
Reception: February 15, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
526 W 26th St
Drawings of Skin, an exhibition of monumental graphite drawings by
Cynthia Lin, will open in the project room at Michael Steinberg Fine
Art on February 15th, 2008, and remain on view until March 15th. The
works presented are derived from computer scans of skin, bodily
orifices, and hair that are microscopically observed and redrawn by
the artist. The almost overwhelming level of detail generates
conflicting sensations of discomfort and fascination.
According to Ms. Lin:
A longtime painter, my devotion to the exploration of surfaces as a
means of gathering knowledge has led to these drawings of skin. I
examine the modern body and its contradictory, fragmentary experience by
meticulously rendering computer-scanned orifices, skin, and hair. By immensely
magnifying these infinitely detailed images, I transform a speedily gained and
deliberately avoided view into a meditative, seemingly timeless examination. By
subjecting a photograph through this almost unimaginably slow process of looking and
drawing, I hope the dismissible becomes confrontational, and the microscopic becomes
monumental.
Lin was recently awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2006. Residency fellowships
include Yaddo, The MacDowell Colony, The Space Program at the Marie Walsh Sharpe
Art Foundation, Djerassi Resident Artists Program, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts,
the Visiting Artists and Scholars Program at the American Academy in Rome, Ragdale,
and Hall Farm Center for the Arts and Education.
Cynthia Lin was born in Taiwan and grew up near Chicago, Illinois. She received her
M.F.A. and M.A. from The University of Iowa, Iowa City, and a B.A. from the University of
California, Berkeley.
Cynthia Lin lives and works in New York.
