Michael Steinberg Fine Art is pleased to announce the debut New York solo exhibition of the paintings of
Mary Ann Strandell. The exhibition opens Thursday April 20th with a reception for the artist from 6-8pm. The show runs through May 20th.
The paintings in Movable Terrain continue
Mary Ann Strandell's interest in Chinoiserie and Meissen pottery as a stand -in for authentic social experience. These new works combine Chinoiserie with California modernist architecture from the 1950's-60's. This collision of the European desire to exoticize eastern culture and the forward -looking American architectural project of California modernism is a powerful collapse of historical spaces. These spaces are painted fictions that unite two utopian constructs across time. These paintings also extend Strandell's long term interest in nature. The chinoiserie encapsulates a romanticized view of the natural environment while the Californian architecture attempts to stand up to and to frame a nature that is enormous in scale, pitting the intimate against the immense.
After 15 years of working in the southwest and midwest United States, Ms. Strandell moved to New York in 2002 and exhibited her work in national and international venues. In the fall of 2005 she exhibited with Lowell Boyers at Panorama Art, Cologne, Germany and an installation project at Real Form Project Space, in Brooklyn, curated by David Gibson in 2005. She was included in OP...ISH at Samson Projects in Boston in 2005. She installed 3D Lenticular prints in Beautiful Dreamer at Spaces Art Center, Cleveland, 2005, curated by David Gibson and another piece in Touch and Temperature at Bitforms Gallery, NY 2004. Her work is included at the Albright Knox Museum in Buffalo, NY, 2005. The breadth of her painting includes a traditional studio practice which is enhanced by her use of digital technologies. The light, airy canvases of teasing figurines and cosmic chandeliers are interspersed with the hyperspace constructions of 3D lenticular prints. Critics have referred to her work as pop baroque.
Mary Ann Strandell holds a M.F.A. from the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque (1993), a M.A. in Studio Art from the University of New Mexico (1989) and a Fellowship from Tamarind Institute, Albuquerque, NM (1987). She received her B.F.A. from the University of South Dakota, cum laude (1984).
