JULIA JACQUETTE
MY HOUSES
APRIL 20th - MAY 20th, 2006
My Houses, a solo show of new works by
Julia Jacquette, will open at Michael Steinberg Fine art on April 20th, and
remain on view until May 20th, 2006. In this, the artist's second exhibition with the gallery, Jacquette presents a
body of work exploring an entirely new domain of subject matter. While remaining true to her practice of culling
imagery from magazines, the recent paintings and watercolors focus, as the title suggests, on the home. In
particular, Jacquette has chosen images of opulent and luxuriant dream houses of the type frequently featured in
decorating and design magazines. In an article in Surface Magazine devoted to her previous works, Aric Chen made
comments on aspects of the artist's work that seem equally applicable to the paintings in the current show.
According to Chen,
“both desire and repulsion, in the guise of consumer culture are the subjects of Jaquette's paintings. Minimalism
and decoration - much less hyper-decoration - don't usually go together, but Jacquette isn't uncomfortable with
clashing sensibilities.”
Speaking about this new departure, Jacquette states:
These paintings are my own confession that I am dazzled and
drawn to images of overstated luxury; they are a self-indictment
of my own coveting of the material, and an admittance of an
abashed desire that refuses to be constrained by good taste.
In 2000, she created “Project 69” for the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
Michael Steinberg Fine Art began it’s
representation of Jacquette with a solo show entitled White Paintings in 2004. That same year, Jacquette was honored with a
significant retrospective of her paintings at The Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs,
New York. Jacquette’s works have been included in numerous group shows throughout the United States and internationally.
