LIQUID LOVE
MAY 25th - JUNE 24th, 2006
Michael Steinberg Fine Art is pleased to present Liquid Love, an exhibition of new paintings by New York-based artist
Amanda Church. Church has been known for creating psychosexual abstractions that combine luscious forms in unexpectedly tart and acidic colors. This body of work—the artist’s most exuberant, and largest in scale to date—continues her exploration of the nexus of Pop and pleasure.
At times evoking sensuous sea creatures, at others tropical foliage, these body-inspired shapes tease us into squaring private yearnings with public personas. They wrestle and vie for attention; caress and nestle. They encourage each viewer to put his or her own emotions on the line within the psychological arena the artist has created. Art critic Sarah Schmerler comments:
“That Church can render her forms familiar, yet ever hard to pin down, is proof of her power as an abstractionist. There’s a strange, inverse-ratio at work: the more she pares down her compositions, the more they are about a sensuous, pure viewing pleasure.”
Amanda Church has exhibited widely in the United States and Europe; this is her second solo exhibition in New York. Her work has been included in numerous group shows such as Pop Surrealism at the Aldrich Museum (Ridgefield, CT), The Figure: Another Side of Modernism at the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art (Staten Island, NY), Humanoid at Frederieke Taylor (NY) and DiverseWorks (Houston, TX), Before and After Science at Marella Arte Contemporanea (Milan), and Reality Revisited at Martin Kudlek Gallery in Cologne. Church’s work is represented in various private and public collections, including the Chambers Hotel and the Deutsche Bank.

HOME AND AWAY
MAY 25th - JUNE 24th, 2006
Home and Away, an exhibition of recent paintings by
Michael Perrone, will open at
Michael Steinberg Fine Art on May 25th, and be on view until June 24th, 2006. In his first solo show with the gallery, the artist will present works that emphasize his concern with the man-made constructed environment that increasingly dominates the visual landscape. Perrone exploits non-traditional materials, bright artificial colors, and a hard-edged, semi-mechanical language of flat graphic shapes to foster a simultaneous sense of engagement and alienation.
Perrone himself has written:
In my paintings, I often place man-made structures next to natural elements. Through this conflation, I seek to draw attention to the synthetic, and confirm its visual power and emotional resonance. Similarly, I aim to displace conventional notions of the sublime, and revel in the beauty of the man-made world.
In Home and Away, Perrone will show paintings ranging in imagery from turnpikes to taverns, subway cars, tunnels, apartment lobbies and tenement interiors. Each of the paintings manifests a uniquely American mix of optimism and despair, sophistication and naivety. They are simultaneously welcoming and threatening.
Michael Perrone received his Master of Fine Arts degree from The University of Pennsylvania. While studying there, he received both The Neil Welliver and The Angelo Savelli awards. He has been granted residencies at The Vermont Studio. Perrone has participated in numerous group shows; he currently lives and works in New York City.
