Under My Skin, Medrie MacPhee's first solo show at Michael Steinberg Fine Art opens on January 5th, 2006. Widely seen internationally over the last five years, with one person museum and gallery shows in London, Toronto and a number of German cities, this return to the New York scene will introduce the most recent and fullest development of the body of work that MacPhee began in the late 1990's.
Commenting on the paintings and drawings included in the exhibition, the artist notes:
“Out of the process of scavenging anatomical illustrations of humans and animals, natural history, architecture and historical paintings, my painting draw their significance from the slippage generated between what is tangible and what is imaginary… The fractured and reconfigured elements are sifted through and edited until I feel that they have found new identities and motivations.”
Throughout her career, MacPhee has received extensive critical attention, and has been featured in many North American and European journals, including Art In America, Border Crossings, and Contemporary Visual Art. Ken Johnson writing in Art In America remarks that “[i]n MacPhee's best paintings it is the combination of imaginal vision, formal complexity, and luxurious painterly sensuality that makes them work so well.” Mathew Biro, in Contemporary [London], observes: “If MacPhee's figuration resembles the tradition of representation inaugurated by the likes of Dali and Tanguy, the color field in which these figures exist evokes post-war abstraction- it is more minimalist, contrasting and acidic.”
Born in Canada, the artist lives and works in New York City. MacPhee's paintings and drawings are included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum, the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Edmonton Art Gallery, the Gallery of Greater Victoria and many other public and private institutions. She is currently the Sherri Burt Hennessey Artist-in-Residence at Bard College.
