evolution-N

evolution-N, an exhibition of new works by Ellen K Levy, will open at Michael Steinberg Fine Art on January 5ht, 2006. The artist's first solo show in New York since 2000, evolution-N is a continuation of Levy's long-term commitment to the exploration of the intersection of science, technology, art and the environment. Levy 'collaborates' with inventors, perusing patent databases to create genealogies of inventions.
Eliciting the potency of our collective imagination, she imbues the process of technological innovation with the dynamic characteristics of evolutionary change. In this new work Levy reflects upon the reverberations of history, the commodification of life forms, and the challenge of surviving in harsh environments.
Her medium is digital collage - she transforms and combines images and texts from registered patents along with other sources and then adds paint to create rich surfaces and patterns. By introducing earlier forms of a particular technology identified through the citations that accompany registered patents, her art tracks the intersections of the legal system, market capitalism, and the political climate. Levy delves into a storehouse of inventions, from survival shelters to Chakrabarty's patent for oil-eating bacteria, which set a precedent for the patenting of living forms and was unsuccessfully used during the Exxon Valdes oil spill. The works in this exhibition explore four industries - biotechnology, oil, space, and nuclear - and their occasional junctures.
Levy is a NYC artist who has explored complex systems in her exhibitions and publications since the founding of the Santa Fe Institute in 1984. She was recipient of a NASA commission and of an AICA Emerging Artist Award, and she was a Distinguished Visiting Fellow in Arts and Science at Skidmore College, a position funded by the Luce Foundation. Levy is currently President of the CAA. Her art works will also be on view in a related exhibition from January 28- March 5, 2006 at the Ezra and Cecile Zilkha Gallery at Wesleyan University.
