MicroCoSM Gallery presents original and collaborative art created by the visionary minds of modern day tattoo masters. The 59 works included in this exhibition are paintings created in the studios of eleven world renown tattooists as well as works created collaboratively by these artists during a two-day event, Visionary Primitive, held at the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors. The exhibition will be on view at
MicroCoSM Gallery through February 3rd.
The art of tattooing began over 5000 years ago and is diverse and cross-cultural. Tattoo artists often rework tattoos performed by a previous artist. Therefore the ability to collaborate and modify existing artwork is essential.
Paintings by master tattooists:
Guy Aitchison, Chicago based tattoo artist, was a shop owner until the early 90's when he moved to a farm outside of Chicago to focus on painting. His world-renown tattoo work has been published in magazines and two monographs, and his paintings have been exhibited widely.
Joe Capobianco's award
winning tattoo work is well known for its style combining the soul of the late 50’s with a modern flair. Michelle Wortman, tattooist, painter, photographer and musician combines photography and painting on glass and canvas to create outstanding visual effects. A traveling tattooist with a Bachelors degree in Fine Arts,
James Kern has many awards for his respected work, which has been featured in numerous tattoo magazines. Tattooing since the age of 19,
Joe Clue's paintings are informed and evolve out of his tattoo work.
Jon Jon, master New York City tattooist and organizer of the Visionary Primitive event at
MicroCoSM Gallery, initiated his unique self-taught style of tattooing as a teenager, and explores both oil and acrylic painting. Artists
Corey Kruger ,
Chris Dingwell,
Zachariah Gregory,
Jared Dimartino,
Dan Craft and
Christian Masot all worked collaboratively at the Visionary Primitive event, creating seamless blends of abstract beauty.
