Andrea Belag: New Paintings
March 24, 2007- April 21, 2007
Reception: March 24, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
520 W 24th St
Mike Weiss Gallery is pleased to announce our first exhibition of work by
Andrea Belag.
Belag’s new oil paintings on canvas move away from the grid-like structure that characterized her earlier abstractions. In her latest body of work, Belag creates space with saturated color, vigorous brushstrokes, and line. These new paintings continue to reference architecture, light and shadow, as Belag underscores a connection to visual themes in Film Noir with titles such as Slightly Scarlet, Detour, and Purple Noon.
A palette of burnt orange, vermilion, deep blues, acid greens, and purple allude to the visual drama of early color cinematography that derives from Austrian film noir filmmakers. Belag paints luminous images that have references to open windows and the body without compromising the work’s integrity as pure abstraction.
Educated at Boston University, Bard College and the New York Studio School,
Andrea Belag has exhibited at museums and galleries across the world. She is the recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship at Bellagio, and an Individual Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. Her work is included in numerous public and private collections.
Andrea Belag is a member of faculty at the School of Visual Arts, and a solo-exhibition of her new paintings Vienna Blue, will open at the Philadelphia Museum of Jewish Art in 2007. This will be her 10th solo exhibition in New York.
