Inspired by the work of Amy Myers
Friday, October 6, 6-8pm
Mike Weiss Gallery is pleased to announce the performance of Fauve by
Steven Burke. His latest work, a composition in two parts for string quartet, is a reaction to the brilliant drawings by Amy Myers, currently on view in her exhibition The Particle Zoo.
Myers’ “unique work,” states Burke, “is electrical and filled with ecstatic rhythms. It never fails to fire my own imagination. I delight in the process and am honored to have the opportunity to indulge my own creative impulses in response to her magical drawings.”
Steven Burke is recognized as one of the leading musical talents of his generation, and his compositions have won critical praise for their emotional power and mastery. Paul Griffiths of The New York Times described Burke as a “highly accomplished” musician whose work is “bursting with historical awareness and creative confidence.” He has been cited by the American Academy of Arts and Letters as a composer who “has that rarest of inventive gifts, a personal voice.”
In his recent body of work, created during and after his fellowship year at the American Academy in Rome (2004-05), Burke has become increasingly involved with collaboration, incorporating visual elements into his creations and drawing inspiration from the visual arts.
Steven Burke began his musical studies with the trumpet at age seven. He has pursued composition exclusively since the age of twenty, and has earned degrees from Sarah Lawrence College, the University of Wisconsin – Madison, Yale University and Cornell University. Burke’s distinctive work has been widely acknowledged by critics and he has been awarded many distinguished prizes and commissions, including the Rome Prize, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Charles Ives Fellowship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and an award from Meet the Composer. Burke has received commissions from the Fromm Music Foundation at Harvard University, the Jerome Foundation, the National Symphony Orchestra, the St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble, Sequitur, the Raschèr Saxophone Quartet and the Albany Symphony. His music has been performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the orchestra of the University of Southern California, the National Symphony Orchestra and the Chicago Chamber Musicians, among others.
