520 W 24th StVersus transforms the gallery space into an arena for artistic showdown, setting up a confrontation between genres and between artists in the same genre. The exhibition promotes a contest of strength and strain, wherein Genre vs. Genre and Artist vs. Artist face-off in the ultimate competition.
Carlos Matter vs. Amy Myers
Swiss artist Carlos Matter’s modular drawings are reflections of a most intense performance. Using a mechanical router as his pencil, the artist carves out intricate lines and designs onto wood panel. Every work has a complex individual rhythm and character, though when viewed as a series their strength multiplies. Beyond the physical intensity of the drawing process, the works reflect notations of musical dimension, exposing another unexpected layer of aesthetic harmony.
Meticulously executed in graphite and pastel on paper, American artist Amy Myers’ drawings consist of webs, chambers and radiating lines which are delicately inscribed on either a light or dark ground. The formal qualities of Myers’ drawings, with their unrestrained force and refined complexity, reflect the inventiveness of natural investigation combined with a spiritual and intuitive artistic vision. Her work also charts new territory within the medium of drawing, elevating it from the sidelines to a medium worthy of consideration on its own merits.
John Newsom vs. Arnulf Rainer
Using naturalism as a catalyst, along with a radical approach to formal painting, American artist John Newsom creates a dynamic global iconography that is uniquely his own. His work touches upon themes basic to our existence: survival, change, reproduction, love – serving as allegories for the human realm and acting as surrogates for reflecting on human culture and society. Thickly textured oil paint and layers of abstract patterning overlaid with images of animals, plants and birds give Newsom’s paintings a vibrant and energetic edge.
Arnulf Rainer is one of the most renowned contemporary Austrian artists. His paintings are characteristic of the expressionism and actionism of post-World War II Viennese art. Highly innovative and theatrical, Rainer’s work explores the causes and limitations of artistic expression, pushing methodology and subject matter to extreme states of subjective experience. In Rainer’s work death, physical pain and spiritual elevation are expressed through the cancellation, negation and destruction of the ideal of painting as well as the artist’s own physical self.
