520 W 24th StMike Weiss Gallery is pleased to announce Vice Versa, the second solo exhibition of new work and installation by German artist Sofi Zezmer.
Sofi Zezmer’s futuristic, biomorphic and precisely structured works are assembled from a wide variety of items, ranging from household utensils and furniture to designer objects and highly specialized medical equipment.
Zezmer’s sculptures have an airy lightness, both as large wall installations and small sculptural pieces. The works often allude to hot scientific topics, such as genetic manipulation and stem-cell research. However her choice of pristine and bright colors and cartoonish forms set in quirky juxtapositions bring playful undertones to her work.
Zezmer’s work also focuses on the way in which experienced reality is filtered and structured by personal perspective and cultural conditioning. Her playful and highly idiosyncratic works explore notions of categorization and identity, giving to a known world of images an unfamiliar edge.
Sofi Zezmer lives and works in Wiesbaden, Germany. She has had solo exhibitions at galleries and institutions throughout Europe and the United States, including Gregory Lind Gallery, San Francisco; Galerie Hafemann and Nassauischer Kunstverein, Wiesbaden; Kunstverein Viernheim, Germany; UBR Galerie Salzburg, Austria; Zacheta Gallery, Warsaw and Awangarda Gallery, Wroclaw, Poland. She was recently featured in Alternative Paradise, a major exhibition at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, Japan.
Zezmer’s work is currently on view in Sirens, a group exhibition at Thom Andriola / New Gallery in Houston, Texas and can be seen in Quirky, a group exhibition at the Westport Arts Center in Connecticut, which opens this summer. In spring 2008 Sofi Zezmer will have a one-person show at the Landes Museum Wiesbaden in Germany.
