Adia Millett

Mixed Greens Gallery

531 W 26th St

Mixed Greens is thrilled to begin the season with Adia Millett's theatrically installed sculptures and corresponding photographs. Interweaving design techniques from both ancient farmlands and modern suburbia, Millett's latest earth-covered miniatures illuminate the complexity and familiarity of what one might call a "space in-between."

Inside every structure, commonplace domestic objects are combined with natural earth-like signifiers to create a psychological space. Dramatic lighting and unexpected elements, such as a sack of potatoes or a floating pillow, lure viewers into a world of magical realism where Millett explores moments between consciousness and unconsciousness, sobriety and intoxication, wakefulness and sleep, living and death. Poetic moments of solitude and individuality are found in the context of repetition.

By working with our fears, our homes, our desires and our politics, Millett challenges the weight of our assumptions. Through the distortion of these ancient domestic spaces, she invites viewers to enter into traces of a dream - otherworldly places where reason is subverted by fantasy.

Adia Millett was born in Los Angeles, California and received her MFA from the California Institute of the Arts. In 2001, she moved to New York City for the prestigious Whitney Museum Independent Study Program and the Studio Museum in Harlem residency program. Millett has been a standout in numerous group exhibitions including the well-received "Greater New York" show at PS1 in Long Island City, New York (2005). In the past, she has been included in exhibitions at the Barbican Gallery, London (2004), The Studio Museum in Harlem (2002, 2005, 2006), The California African American Museum, Los Angeles (2003), The New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York City (2003), the Museum of Contemporary Art, Atlanta (2003), and the Santa Monica Museum of Art (2001). She is the recipient of a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship (2003). Next year, she will have a major solo exhibition at the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia. Millett is the Artist Profile in the August 2007 issue of Ebony Magazine.
