The ability to stop time and grasp a fleeting image. In that heart beat, worlds exist and then cease to exist, to be
relegated to the shadowy world of memories.
The human race has always endeavored to record personal and significant events. Recently on a trip to the
southwest whilst observing a series of pictographs, I found myself wondering “what if ancient man had had the ability to photograph their world. To have been able to capture the population, landscapes, and events with complete clarity. How much that would have impacted our perception of the past?”
Over the past one hundred and fifty years, the ability to freeze moments in time has continued to develop and
redefine itself. It has allowed viewers not only a glimpse into the past but the ability to gain perspective into their day to day world and beyond with images such as those generated by the “Hubble Telescope” or MRIs that look into the human body itself to discover its complex working.
No matter what format of technology is used, the effectiveness of capturing the image is directed by the hand, eye and instincts of the photographer. A master will tell you a story; draw you into that moment and beyond, allowing you to feel and be a part of the image and finally leaving you with a shared memory. All that is left for the viewer to do is stop and take the time to ….. look.
