Monya Rowe Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Los-Angeles based artist
Kevin Christy titled The Victory of Variables.
Kevin Christy’s new suite of works on paper features mixed media collaged drawings with explicitly political concerns. When not surrounded by various paper constructs the formal characteristics of the works hold a tension between disorganization and the ideological scope of their meticulous linear arrangements.
Blue-collar working class citizens are depicted in plaid shirts, sneakers and ‘trucker’ hats that adorn souvenir pins of various American states such as Florida, California and Texas; a nod to the upcoming elections while quietly commenting on the numerous choices one is faced with. Christy’s work is steeped in political undertones; In The Way Things Go (2006) the protagonists’ face is filled with a camouflage pattern while others are hybrids of zombies and humans.
The open spaces and sporadic hollowness of the works gives an eerie forbearing to the psychological center of the zombies and faceless characters that line the drawings interiors. In a subtle, yet rancorous, political environment Christy leaves pictorial references to liberal icons of the past such as American Presidents. The visage of Jimmy Carter wedged behind a zombie heralds nothing good for our future.
Kevin Christy received a BFA from Pasadena Art Center College of Design, California. He has had solo exhibitions at Richard Heller Gallery, Los Angeles, Jack Hanley, San Francisco and
Monya Rowe Gallery, New York. This is the artists’ second solo exhibition at
Monya Rowe Gallery. He lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.
Please note: The gallery will be open by appointment only from December 23 – January 1, 2007. We will reopen on January 2.
