Monya Rowe Gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of New York-based artist
Mark Schubert titled Yard Work.
For this exhibition Schubert has created five sculptures comprised of foam, plastic polymers and various found objects. Most of the materials can be seen in a suburban yard: wheelbarrows, plastic lawn chairs and lawn ornaments.
The sculptures tactile twists and structural shards imply an infinite number of possible interpretations. The melted plastics and polymorphous blobs convey a loss of control and violence. While the pastel colored surfaces offer a sense of playfulness and Americana, there is an undeniable aggression in the distortion, and reshaping the disposable. Schubert’s sculpture inverts the hierarchical relationship between sculpture and painting, privileging the solid form of the sculpture over which he drapes the sediments of the painted plane. The work is an intersection of figuration and abstraction, the ephemeral and permanent, the transient and the stationary. Heavy constructed globs hang off an exoskeleton lunging upwards, grafting a sense of the majestic collapse to a bulky base of temperate precariousness.
Mark Schubert received a BFA from Madison University, Wisconsin. His work has recently been included in group exhibitions at Southfirst, Brooklyn (selected by Jose Lerma) and
Monya Rowe Gallery.
