This show opens Thursday, April 5th and continues through Saturday, April 28th. This black and white photography series seeks to express the ramifications that violence has on individual subjects in society, in this case, mothers. Tobechukwu’s level of compassion toward the human condition can be felt through his candid approach to the tragic pain of senseless loss. His camera captures a range of empathy, dignity and love. The artist’s intent to create awareness, dialogue and incentive for social change is carefully embodied in the form, giving an equally aesthetically fulfilling presentation in this series.
Tobechukwu’s experience with photography has focused on capturing the people in natural spontaneous settings or artistically created situations. Not always looking for the most beautiful subject, but the most interesting and visually appealing to his perception. Mr. Tobechukwu studied art and photography at the Maryland Institute College of Arts and the Baltimore School for the Arts. The artist was a recipient of the McKnight Artist Fellowship for Photography in 2004. He has also received a Civil Rights Award for his socially powerful work by the Minnesota Center for Photography among other awards. He has exhibited nationally.
Tobechukwu will also be presenting some prints from his travels to Darfur.
