NY Studio Gallery is pleased to present The Unnatural World, an exhibit by New York based artist
Kristen Copham. An installation of various works coupled with live performance reflect the show’s theme of metaphysical anxiety in the physical modern world.
Figurative works abound in an ever-shifting environment. Objects created in ceramic and oils are arranged in a less-than-pristine space, as the artist draws and paints directly on the wall during the course of the installation, changing the location and arrangement of individual works as the weeks pass. A demarcated area serves as a performance space in which the artist resides during gallery hours – playing music, sketching, emoting or performing intuitive yoga movements.
“My work is about the ongoing uneasiness I feel as my life unfolds. It’s a mixture of physical and mental achiness, punctuated by troubling world events, aging and ennui, and the annoying desire to do something worthwhile during my short journey here. I’m interested in the ever-developing plot of the sentient being, trapped for a short while in a physical body in a physical world which frequently makes little sense,” the artist explains. “By creating a changing environment in which both my work and my body move and change, I hope to express this sense of discomfort.
