"Drawn from Maine" features seven highly accomplished artists, ranging from emerging to established, whose works on paper are attracting attention both nationally and internationally. To varying degrees
Scott Davis,
Anna Hepler,
Alison Hildreth, Joe Kievitt,
Justin Richel,
Mara Sprafkin, and
Andrea Sulzer address issues of personal memory or the passage of time, either historically via the Federal-era humorous portraits of Richel or the Pop movement of the 1960s by Sprafkin. Maine's great artistic legacy rests primarily on landscape paintings of Winslow Homer, Marsden Hartley, and Andrew Wyeth among countless others. In this instance Hildreth, Kievitt and Sulzer reference the landscape in drawings that depend far more on pattern calling to mind Asian art and fragmentation than to traditional landscapes.
Scott Davis's elegant drawings reduced to essential lines speak to the economy of Japanese haiku poetry (and Shaker furniture) whereas Hepler's obsessive detailed mark making in her two large circle drawings was created in a Zen-like meditative state of mind. Altogether, the aim of this exhibition has been to bring together seven distinctly different voices from Maine whose works invite a lively conversation among each other.
