The Nancy Margolis gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition, Sun Koo Yuh: New Sculpture, opening Thursday, February 1 through March 3, 2007. This is Yuh's first solo exhibition in New York at the
Nancy Margolis Gallery.
Sun Koo Yuh's multi-layered, towering sculptures, some more than 12' high, speak to the human condition in all its dimensions. Filled with chaotic figures and objects, distorted, and exaggerated, these sculptures share a commonality with German Expressionism of the 1920s, for, like these artists, Yuh reinforces the mood and intensity of feeling through caricature rather than through the presentation of objective reality. The colors, blues, greens, yellows and blacks, and the method of glazing impact the form and the mood. It is rare for sculpture of this scale to be made of porcelain, a material that is unforgiving, and difficult, and Yuh has distinguished himself as a skilled master of the medium.
For Yuh, the creative process begins first with ink and brush drawings. When he is satisfied that he has found the direction for the sculpture, he starts the construction, which may take several months to complete. These drawings are an important link to the sculpture, and to Yuh, therefore a selection of the drawings that relate directly to the sculpture will be included in the exhibition.
Raised and educated in Korea, Yuh obtained his B.F.A. from Hong Ik University, Seoul, Korea and later received his M.F.A from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred, New York. Yuh was awarded the Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant and the University of Georgia Faculty Research Grant in 2005 and is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Georgia, Athens, GA and the Penland School of Crafts, Penland, NC,
Sun Koo Yuh's work is in permanent collections at The Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian, the Icheon World Ceramic Center, Korea, The Philadelphia Museum of Art as well as many public and private collections in the United States and Asia.
Reviews of Sun-Koo Yuh: Sculpture
New York Times February 23, 2007 | | Roberta Smith | | "Besides being an impressive debut, the first New York show of the Korean-born artist Sun Koo Yuh is a reminder that Chelsea is, above all, a plethora of almost literally shape-shifting contexts. Imagine encountering these lushly colored, ingeniously glazed, adamantly multicultural porcelain sculptures in one of the area’s hip, high-end galleries instead of one dedicated to works made of fired clay, and you’ve got a different kettle of fish...." |
