Newman Popiashvili Gallery is pleased to present Blck, Red & Tang, the first New York solo exhibition of
Adler Guerrier. The exhibition, a collection of drawings, photographs and sculptures, explores the use of language and the photographic image, inspired by 60s and 70s Black Nationalism and ideas developed in the works of Chester Himes and Duke Ellington, shaped into a voice sympathetic to poetic rebellion, dissent and revolution. The works also feature texts culled from broadsheets, pamphlets and graffiti of the French student movement from May '68. The pivotal role of objects and signs set against and/or in conjunction with specific landscapes creates a conceptual framework for these works.
Adler Guerrier is a Miami based artist. His work has been included in the Freestyle exhibition curated by Thelma Golden and Christine Kim at The Studio Museum in Harlem and his installation, untitled (BLCK - We wear the mask), is currently displayed in the 2008 Whitney Biennial.
