The Aftermath
March 11, 2006- March 25, 2006
504 W 22nd St
(end date not known)
Newman Popiashvili Gallery is pleased to present second solo exhibition of New York-based Dutch
artist Gerben Mulder. The title of the show, The Aftermath, comes from the title of one of the paintings
in the exhibition. The underlying themes of Mulder?s work are innocence, love and the consequential
tragedy related to the loss of both.
The remaining four paintings are single portraits of Annabelle Lee, Phantasm, Red Head Girl and
Early Morning Tragedy. Each portrait is placed against a monochromatic background ranging from black
to bright yellow. His Annabel Lee is posed ala Venus de Milo, armless with exposed breasts and a drape
around her waist. The portrait refers to Edgar Allen Poe's poem of the same title.
Gerben Mulder is known for his portraits of young girls in highly sexualized poses that all bare
a striking resemblance to the artist. With the character of Annabel Lee, the artist found the perfect
protagonist that fully embodies his work young, unrequited love and the tragedy of lost innocence.
But as before where his children seemed adult-like, now his adults are infused with childishness
like in Phantasm and Red Head Girl.
Gerben Mulder had solo exhibitions at K4, Munich, Galerie Michael Janssen in Cologne and Fortes/Vilaca
in Sao Paolo, Brazil. His work will be featured in the upcoming show at the Akron Museum of Art.
